climbing a mountain

Happy Friday all!

This weekend I am trading in my these:

for shoes of a slightly different kind. a slightly less glamorous kind.

I am going to be escaping:

On:

(not really, but kinda…)

I am embarking on a kind of personal mission. To the top of a mountain. The tallest one in the continental United States to be exact. Tomorrow I will be climbing the great Mt. Whitney. 22 miles roundtrip to 14,500 feet. It will probably take us upwards of 14 hours. Yep, you heard me. It will be challenging. But I am kinda thinkin I’m up for it.

Because you know what thet say:

“Everybody needs beauty as well as bread, places to play in and pray in, where nature may heal and give strength to body and soul.” – John Muir

wish me luck <3

breton striped

I picked up this Breton striped dress at Gap the other day and brought it out this past weekend, since it was kind of perfectly festive without being obnoxious.  Since it is the ubiquitous Gap, and shockingly affordable at $39.50, I saw many a gal sporting it around the city over the weekend. But I’m okay with that, I like to think I kind of made it all my own.

On our walk home from a jaunt to the Fillmore Jazz Festival for sangria, saxophones and fresh salt water taffy, my girlfriend Aileen and I found a pretty garden tucked in this little neighborhood called Pacific Heights. Maybe you’ve heard of it? A photoshoot was born.

As you can see, to set me apart from the crowd, I chose to jewel-up my striped dress – coral necklace from Anthropologie, turquoise necklace  Banana Republic, gold charm necklace my own creation. P.S. this dress also comes in tee shirt form! It’s on sale, run don’t walk!

happy 6th of july

Happy 6th of July! I can’t believe it is already July. It hit me this weekend as I turned my calendar over and started celebrating Independence Day and the long weekend.

….

Normally I go home to Seattle for 4th of July weekend to hang out with my family and enjoy the festivities on our little island. It unfortunately didn’t happen this year due to my busy work/life schedule. But the family did send me pictures throughout the day to show me what I was missing.

Like these:

from Seattle’s Cupcake Royale : Red Velvet w/ a blueberry on top (red, white & blue) & Strawberry 66 (cupcake of the month made with fresh local berries)

and these:

Fresh picked Bainbridge Island strawberries and raspberries from the farm up the road from my childhood home.

They really know how to get me, that family. Pretty cruel, huh?

I spent the holiday in true San Franciscan fashion: midday mimosa picnic and bluegrass guitar sing-along in Dolores Park, and an evening rooftop viewing of the fireworks over Bernal Hll in the Mission (far away from the fog that was plaguing the northern part of the city). It was a beautiful, sunny day spent with good friends. A few of my snapshots:

my lovely friend Aileen (in turquoise and lace and tortoiseshell sun g’s!), and partner in crime for the weekend.

I wore my ban.do  red sequin heart headband for a shot of patriotism and sparkle

Aileen and I did our nails on Saturday.  I got into the fashion nail decals from Walgreens. I am quite happy with my DIY works of art. Kind of impressive, don’t you agree?

and then there was the acoustic bluegrass sing-along

I hope you had a lovely 4th of July, yourself!

long live McQueen

Post Lee Alexander McQueen’s tragic and untimely death in February of this year, it seems that celebrities everywhere are paying tribute to him by sporting his designs around town.

In the house of McNulty, we’re having our very own ode to McQueen. In the form of the iconic skull and crossbones scarf.

It’s actually a good story, a case of fashion destiny, if you will.

The story is about my mother, Pam. (the one with the buying power around these parts, damn her)

The story goes: Pam was shopping at the downtown Seattle Nordstrom one day after having lunch with her girlfriends. They were cruising the first floor: shoes, makeup, accessories….

Pam made the ladies stop in the scarf section. In front of the small display of silk chiffon Alexander McQueen skull scarves to be exact.

Pam to Ladies: “you know I have always wanted one of these scarves.”

(when she told me this bit I actually was a bit shocked - I had no idea she had lusted over this skull scarf, but then again, my mother does surprise me from time to time.)

Ladies: “well, you better buy one now, they will be collector’s items soon.”

(I am pretty sure the house of McQueen will keep producing these scarves for many years to come, much like Hermès does, but the original lot of scarves designed by Mr. McQueen himself will inevitably become valuable.)

Suddenly, a salesgirl approaches.

Salesgirl to Pam: “you know, this is the very last of our early Spring delivery. These are the last of the McQueen originals. They will be gone very soon.”

Pam: “Well, I have always wanted one, but you know what, I am just not a silk chiffon scarf person. I don’t know if I would wear it. The one I really wanted was one of the large wool/cashmere colorful ones.” (She claims this is because it’s more practical….)

Salesgirl pauses…and thinks… and then says, “well, hold on a second….” She disappears into the backroom.

Pam waits patiently in anticipation.

Salesgirl comes back out a couple of moments later, with a purple and green  large wool/cashmere McQueen scarf in her hand.

Salesgirl: “We just had someone return this who had received it as a gift and decided to exchange it for one of the silk chiffon black and white ones. Is this what you were thinking of?”

Pam: “That’s exactly the one I was thinking of!”

This was unbelievably actually the exact scarf my mother had wanted. Her favorite colors are indeed purple and green. As I mentioned before: it was fashion destiny. Pam now had to own the scarf. God clearly wanted it (or McQueen himself, as he possibly divine intervened in this too).

Now Pam owns a piece of contemportary fashion history. And yes, I will be inheriting it one day.  Until that day, I  get the pleasure of knowing there is a piece of Mr. Lee Alexander McQueen in the family. Long live McQueen. <3.

interview

I am kind of obsessed with Carey Mulligan’s cover spread from this month’s Interview magazine.  Grainy black and white photographs intermittently splashed with sheer paint splatters in neon pink and orange. I am loving the cotton striped sweater she wears in photo 2 and the sheer cropped long sleeve number in the last photo.
